Spring Meeting Recap

The Nebraska Fur Harvesters Association members met April 30th, 2017 at the VFW in Seward, Nebraska.  President Eric Stane gave out door prizes including dog proof traps, .22 ammo, bait and lure.  Shane Claeys of Papio Creek Trapping Supply was there with products for the giveaway also, including his dirt hole augers and hole punches.

The following points are a recap of what was discussed at the meeting:

  • Discussed the 2017 convention, and what vendors are going to be there and how things are progressing.  Discussed the possibility of two demos going on at the same time.
  • Approved the purchase of a new PA system for use during demos and at the convention.
  • We are looking for more volunteers to do trappers education presentations.  Contact Eric Stane if interested.
  • Talked about ways we can promote fur by donating a fur jacket, scarf, etc to Miss Nebraska or Miss Rodeo Nebraska.
  • Discussed a legal defense fund.  Also discussed a spring banquet to help fund the legal defense fund.  Fund monies would be reserved to help other states in need of trapping defense funds, as well as for our own use if the need arises.
  • Repairs to the enclosed trailer for hail damage were discussed and approved.
  • The NFH will become a member of the Sportsman’s Alliance in addition to being affiliate members of the FTA and NTA.
  • Discussed trapping regulations and what anyone would want to see changed.
  • Discussed the reduced/no cost hunt, fish, and fur harvest permits offered to veterans.  If you are a veteran age 64 or older, a deployed military member, or a disabled vet, please look into getting one of these.  This is a great service offered by our game and parks.

If you have any questions or would like more information about volunteering for trappers education, contact Eric Stane at ericnfh@gmail.com

Spring Meeting Set

The Nebraska Fur Harvesters Spring Meeting will be held Sunday, April 30th in Seward, Nebraska at the VFW Club.  Meeting will start at noon.  Lunch will be provided.  This is a general business meeting for the membership to discuss and vote on matters of importance to the organization.  All current members are invited and encouraged to attend.

Click here for a  google map showing the meeting location.

Come hear what our organization is up to and be a part of it and voice your opinions.  See you there!

Highlights From The NFH Business Meeting

The 2016 convention is in the books and a good time was had by all.  Underneath all the vendor booths, tailgaters and demos is always the Nebraska Fur Harvesters general membership meeting.  This is where policy and decisions are made by the organization, and this is open to all NFH members in current standing who desire to be a part of the direction and decision making of our organization.

Usually the biggest item on the agenda is where to hold the convention for the upcoming year.   A couple guys from Sidney were here and made a very compelling case for their city.  It was put to a vote and decided that next year’s convention will be in Sidney, Nebraska, September 22 – 23.  Note:  Someone please get me the names of these two gentlemen so I can update this article to give them proper credit.

In other items of importance, it was decided to send more money to help out Montana in their fight against Initiative 177 which would ban trapping on public ground in that state.

The youth trapping education program was discussed, as well as Gary Macke’s youth program he helps with.

Nebraska Game and Parks Furbearer Biologist Sam Wilson gave his report.  It is looking good for a discounted fur harvest permit for seniors and veterans.  Things are also starting to look good for an Otter season in Nebraska, but it is a long process and the specifics are still being worked out.

The positions of Treasurer and Vice President were up for election this year.  No one contested, so Monty Arnold (VP) and Jason Reynoldson (Treasurer) will retain their offices.

Gary Macke presented the Nebraska Fur Harvesters with a check for $800 from NAFA.

NFH Spring Meeting will be held in Seward Nebraska,  April 30th, noon, at the VFW.

Some new things coming to the website will be online membership signups and some NFH merchandise sales.

If you have any questions, use the Contact Us link at the top of the page or email Eric Stane at ericnfh@gmail.com

A Call To Help Nebraska Trapping Youth

Hello everyone,

In case you are not familiar with me, my name is Mike Lance and I have been a NFH member since before 1984. When the Midwest Trapper (Precursor to the Trapper and Predator Caller) was first published by Mr. Chuck Spearman in the mid 70’s I had an article in the 3rd issue (pre dates me a little doesn’t it!).  I’m the fellow who runs the Kids Trap Toss on Saturdays during the general meeting of the NFH annual Fall Convention. I try to keep the “natives” from getting too restless while you tend to the “business”. Which is why I am writing. If we continue to do this we need donated traps from members like you to award as prizes to the kids. I can’t begin to thank the folks who have donated all types of traps through  years, but Dave Hastings, Jim Cronin, Joe Jack, Kris McAllister, Don Miller and several others went way above what I asked. Many times reaching into their own pockets and time slots to provide me with enough prizes and time to make the Trap Toss a success. I’m now asking you newer members to take their place by donating a trap or two so the NFH Fall Convention Trap Toss can continue….. #0’s, 1’s, 1.5’s, 2’s, LS or Coils, small body grip traps, gopher& mole traps,  etc. are prizes given in the Toss and are currently needed. Typically we need from 50-60 individual traps/yr. in order that every boy and girl gets 1. Bring anything you have to the convention  – new or “pre-owned” in useable condition and I’ll keep this portion of the Convention active as long as the members want. If you need to visit on this or about any other topic let me know with a call @ cell # 402-841-0380 or Pilger NE @396-3718. Thanks.

As always,

Searching for the $9.63 (Top Lot)  Opossum,
