Upcoming Trapper Education Classes

The Nebraska Fur Harvesters has announced dates for two upcoming trapper education classes.  One class will be held in Palmyra on September 8th, 2018, and the other will be in Laurel on September 9th, 2018.

Locations, times and more details will be posted when they come available.

The Nebraska Fur Harvesters Trapper Education classes are get-togethers designed to introduce young people to trapping.  They are geared towards youth, but anyone can benefit and everyone is welcome.  They usually involve a classroom portion and an outdoor portion.  We talk about regulations, equipment and responsible trapping.

If you have any questions please contact Eric Stane, president and education coodinator of the Nebraska Fur Harvesters Association.  Eric can be reached at ericnfh@gmail.com or (402) 658-8012.

First Annual Spring Banquet Is Called A Success!

No one really knew what to expect Saturday evening for the very first Spring Banquet.  We figured at the worst, we would have  a lot of leftover Windsor chops to send home with people.

When all the dust settled, it was much better than expected.  Compared to other sporting banquets (Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, etc) the crowd was light.  But for the first NFH Spring Banquet and the Seward VFW club it was just right.

The purpose of the banquet was to raise money to start building a

defense fund to help protect our sportsman’s rights.  The folks at the Seward VFW club did an outstanding job both cooking and serving the meal.  The vendors stepped up and made some very good donations, and the members present stepped up and supported our cause.  In the end it was a good time had by all.

Iowa members Allan Sayre of Hilltop Outdoors/Funke Trap Tags & Supplies and Craig Sweet of the Iowa Trappers Association brought in raffle items such as a dozen MB-550 traps, youth trapping kits, canine trapping kits, and copper trap tags (which Allen made and has already sent out).  Also among the donations was an ICOTec Electronic Predator Call.

NFH Member and owner of Papio Creek Trapping Supply, Shane Clayes donated several land trapping packages and water trapping packages, which were jam packed with baits and lures.  Shane donated a bunch of augers and diggers for the raffle as well.

Other donations included an autographed copy of Hoofbeats of a Wolfer, donated by Kevin Jones of Jones Fur buying.  Lesel Reuwsaat donated a full DVD set, and Mark June donated his Coyote DVDs, volumes 1 and 2.

The Nebraska Fur Harvesters donated a 2 year membership and a Dunn Knife for the raffle as well.

There were other numerous prizes raffled off, and a few of the bigger ticket items were silent auctioned.

See more of the donations and action here in the photo gallery.

The guest speaker was Conservation Officer Stacey Lewton of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.  Stacey talked about being a game warden in the state and the things he runs into during the course of his work.  He reminisced about growing up in Harlan

county and his trapping and wildlife adventures.  He came early and stuck around till the end of the banquet visiting with the folks and answering questions.  A big thanks to Stacey for coming out and supporting us trappers!

We are all looking forward to next year for the second annual spring banquet!

Spring Meeting Recap

The spring meeting of the Nebraska Fur Harvesters was held on April 21st, 2018 at the Seward VFW in Seward Nebraska.

President Eric Stane discussed the trailer situation and explained to the members present what had been done about the trailers.  For those that do not know, the NFH owned a trailer that we use to haul tables, chairs, cooking equipment, PA systems, etc to conventions

and wherever needed.  This trailer incurred some hail damage.  We were paid an insurance claim.  We ended up buying a couple new trailers, a larger one and a smaller one.

Dave Hastings gave the FTA report and Mark Hajny gave the NTA report.  Both of these reports pertain to current goings-on in the respective national trapping organizations.  Including issues around the country pertaining to fur harvesting.

The upcoming fall convention in West Point was discussed.  It was agreed that we would charge a gate fee to get in.  This will help cover costs of renting the facility, etc.   Table allocation and arrangements were briefly discussed.

The fairness of reciprocity between Nebraska and neighboring states was discussed.  Also discussed was whether or not it was fair to charge non-resident children the full price of a non-red. license when accompanied by an adult.  Letters have been drafted for both issues and will be presented to the Nebraska game and parks officials for possible change.

Business meetings of the Nebraska Fur Harvesters are open to all current members in good standing, and you are encouraged to come find out what is going on and have your opinion heard.  We always welcome members, new and old to the meetings.

Details for the banquet will be released as they come available. But there will be a guest speaker, awesome food (steak and sides), and a silent auction/raffle full of great stuff that you as a sportsman will find good use for.

Used Traps Needed For Youth

Once again at the Nebraska Fur Harvesters Convention, Mike Lance will be doing the youth trap toss.  This is a fun activity for kids of all ages.  Mike has been doing this for a lot of years and kids look forward to it every year.

But we need your help.

We need used traps for the giveaway.  Each kid comes away with a trap to take home.  If you are coming to the convention, please bring a 1 1/2 coil spring, dog proof, or 110 for donation to the youth trapping program.  If you are not coming, send one with someone who is.

If you are at the convention and see Mike, tell him thanks for all he does for Nebraska’s trapping future.

Thank you for your donations!
